Consultation has concluded. Thank you for your participation.
Instead of separate speed limits for playground zones and school zones, the City of Chestermere is considering the creation of 'harmonized' school and playground zones.
What we have: Currently, the City's school zones are in effect from 7am-5pm Monday to Friday and playground zones are in effect from 8:30am-1 hour after sunset every day.
What Council is considering: Should this pass, all school and playground zones would be 30km/h for the same specified hours (e.g. 8am to 9pm, 7 days a week).
Why we are looking at this: Safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to our children.Since 2018, Chestermere Enforcement has issued more than 90 speeding tickets in playground and school zones. There is significant evidence from a City of Calgary/University of Calgary study that when a municipality has harmonized zones, overall speeds are lower and there can be up to 70% decreases in pedestrian related collisions. Harmonized zones can also decrease confusion about start and end times of the zones which helps to increase pedestrian safety.
