Taxi Bylaw Amendment

The City of Chestermere’s Taxi Bylaw requires a taxi or ride-share company that picks up passengers in Chestermere to hold a valid business license for the company.

To ensure better regulation, the City is considering changing the requirement so that all drivers (not just the company) need to hold a valid business license.

First reading of the Bylaw Amendment was passed on December 18, 2018. You can read the draft of the Bylaw here.

  • The Calgary based company I work for offers taxi chits for employees so they do not drink and drive after a company event. They only use one cab company. How would this new bylaw affect the company supplied taxi chits?

If the proposed amendments are approved it will not impact Calgary, or any taxi service, from dropping off a customer. The proposed changes will only impact taxis services picking up customers in Chestermere. Then they would be required to apply for the $50 business licence.

  • How much does a taxi / ride-share license cost for drivers now? How much will it cost in with the proposed changes?

Currently, a company that is not based out of Chestermere can get a license that covers all of their drivers for $300 per year. A company based in Chestermere would pay $50 per year to cover all of their drivers.

With the proposed changes, each driver (regardless of where their company is located) will need to pay $50 for a license each year.

  • Why are you looking at amending the bylaw?

Drivers who are employed with a large company are not required to apply for a business licence as they are covered under the organization's licence. He/she just has to have a copy of the licence in the vehicle at all times.  Drivers who are contracted/independent operators for large organizations are required to have a licence under their own business name and must have a copy in the vehicle at all times. Requiring every driver to have a license (not just the company) makes the system more fair for everyone.

  • What are the potential impacts of the proposed changes?

Every driver that is part of a larger company will be required to have a valid license. Some drivers may feel that the cost of a license is restrictive and may not want to pick up passengers in Chestermere. However, this new requirement would create a fair and balanced system for all operators who choose to conduct business within the City of Chestermere.
